Bathroom Remodelling FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions and what you should know when renovating your bathroom.

A renovation is removing, repairing and generally renewing the existing bathroom appearance. Remodelling is the major reconstruction, moving or a complete redesign which may require design, drawings and permits.

You want a nonslip floor tile. The same tile is not used for the walls and floors. The shower base must be a little different in style and size. Those tiles are on flexible sheets to accommodate the varying angles for water flow. (a common style is 2” x 2” tile on a 12” x 12” sheet or similar in a stone look.). A newer way to go, because more people are staying away from grout, is a one-piece shower base where no tiles are used. It comes with no curb for a roll in profile and the glass goes right to the floor.
There are many products on the market for around the house. The most common, for bathrooms, are tiles and grout. More people are switching over to vinyl plank, because they are waterproof, or just running the main hardwood flooring straight through. Many people don’t want grout lines and you want to stay away from a wood laminate product in the bathroom.

New bathroom fixtures would depend on the function of the bathroom, cost, and space available. Is it a 2-piece, 3-piece, spa or separate shower room? The toilet can be a low flush, high seat with a large bowl which depends on occupancy, Older people want the higher, elongated bowl for ease of sitting and getting up. Younger people do not care as much. The vanity can be many different sizes, depending on space. It can be as simple as a pedestal or wall hung to a large 4’ or 5’ granite top with his and her sinks. The shower can be many different things depending on the look you are trying to obtain and who is it for. For a guest bath a tub and shower combination are acceptable. For an ensuite you may want to go for a separate tub and shower. The tub could be a corner style, an alcove, L shape or free standing. The shower encloser can be a curtain, shower stall or custom made with glass, with or without a door. The shower head could be a rain shower head or a standard shower from the wall. Our Master plumber can give you the best advice based on your plumbing renovation needs.

Is this for resale, for guest or just to refresh the bathroom. For resale, the most important things are the shower, toilet, and vanity. For yourself it is a personal preference.
As a contractor I do not suggest that. It may be less expensive, but you will not get the additional life or quality of the product.
